Week of September 23rd

This week we will shift focus to writing our first formal essays of the 2019-2020 school year. The first essay with be either an explanatory or an informative essay. We have reviewed models of each and students will be given a prompt to respond to in the form of a 5-paragraph essay.

English 7

On Monday students will receive the essay assignment sheet, the essay prompt, and the rubric I will use to grade the essay. Students will spend the remainder of class brainstorming and planning their essays. The brainstorming activity and planning graphic organizer will be collected and graded on Tuesday, 9/24. Students will begin drafting their essays by hand on Tuesday and will continue drafting into Wednesday. The first draft of the essay has a goal of getting ideas onto paper in complete sentences. Adjustments to grammar, spelling, punctuation, word usage, and order can be adjusted in the final draft.

Students will begin typing their essays on Thursday, 9/26. We will have 5 days in class to type essays. We will type using Google Docs, so the document is accessible from any device with internet access including smartphones, home computers, and library computers. To access Google Docs, students must sign in using their gapps email account and their gapps (Chromebook) password.

Students should have each paragraph checked by the teacher as they type (unless they are typing outside of class in which case their progress can be checked the following day). This will ensure everyone is on a track to success! Each paragraph should be 4-7 sentences in length.

The typing schedule is as follows:
Thursday 9/26- type introduction paragraph
Friday 9/27- type body paragraph 1
Monday 9/30- type body paragraph 2
Tuesday 10/1- type body paragraph 3
Wednesday 10/2- type conclusion paragraph
The final essay will be due Thursday, October 10th.
Students should see me for a pass to type in the library during AC prep if additional work is still needed after in-class typing concludes.
