Week of March 2nd

Students in 7th grade will begin work for their persuasive essays. Students in 8th grade will finish work on Flowers for Algernon.

English 7
Students will be extending what they learned in Language Arts about evaluating arguments this week in English class. This will culminate in a persuasive essay, which will be the summative assessment of the unit. Students will receive all essay requirements and practice thesis writing this week. Week 10 language bellringers are due Friday and will be worth 20 points.

Week of February 24th

All Classes:
Week 9 Language bellringers from last week will be collected on Monday and will be worth 20 points. The "Red Scooter" passage and questions will be graded on Tuesday and will be worth 15 points. Students should be sure to have evidence marked for questions 4, 8, 9, and 10. This will be worth additional points.

English 7
Students will be writing responses to South Korean pen pals. This will include a day for peer editing and then a day for writing a final, neat, copy. Rough drafts of the letters are due Wednesday at the end of class. Final drafts of letter are due Friday at the end of class.
Week 9 Paragraph bellringer will be collected on Friday and will be worth 20 points.

Week of February 17th

English 7
Students will be writing responses to South Korean pen pals. This will include a day for peer editing and then a day for writing a final, neat, copy.

English 8
Students will be reading "Flowers for Algernon" from the textbook. Students should be sure to bring their textbooks to class this week.

Schedule For 8th Grade Research Paper This Week


Week of February 10th

Students in 7th grade will continue their work with "Dark They Were, and Golden Eyed" this week with specific focus on elements of fiction including figurative language and author's point of view. Students in 8th grade will have this week to type their research papers and complete their works cited pages.

English 7
On Monday students will listen to an audio recording of "Dark They Were, and Golden Eyed" as their second read of the text. Comprehension check questions from last week will also be checked.
On Tuesday, students will receive definitions of types of figurative language including personification, imagery, simile, and metaphor. We will also complete a worksheet that helps students practice finding evidence for their analysis of the short story. On Wednesday, students will work mostly with partners in the completion of figurative language practice.
On Thursday and Friday, students' knowledge will be extended with focus on author's point of view and how that contributes to the meaning of the text.

English 8
On Monday students will finish their outlines for their research papers and begin typing. Students will have the entirety of class on Tuesday and Wednesday to continue typing. On Thursday, students will create a works cited page for their essays together. If a student is absent on Thursday, they should create their works cited using the website Easybib.com and following the directions there. The essay is due Friday, February 21 but we will not be working on the essay in class after February, 13th.

Week of February 3rd

This week 7th grade students will be reading "Dark They Were, and Golden-Eyed" from page 127 of the textbook. We will be analyzing craft and structure, with particular focus on character development and figurative language. Students in 8th grade will be completing their research for their research papers and then outlining their essays this week.


English 7
On Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, we will complete a first read of Ray Bradbury's short story "Dark They Were, and Golden-Eyed." As we read, students will be expected to annotate- paying special attention to figurative language and character changes and development throughout the story.

On Friday, and extending into homework over the weekend, students will be required to complete a 2nd read of the short story and complete a study guide as they read. Students should understanding the main idea from the first-read as a class, and should be able to hone in on details (directed by the study guide) independently during their 2nd read. Students will need to have the 2nd read and the study guide complete by Monday, 2/10.

English 8
On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, 8th grade students will be in the library completing the research for their research papers. Students are required to find 4 accurate and reliable sources and create a source card for each. If students have fewer than 4 sources by the end of class on Wednesday, they will need to complete their research independently during an Academic Prep period, or outside of school at home or a local library.

On Thursday and Friday, students will be outlining their research papers. They are required to use at least two of the four sources in their paper. Each body paragraph of the paper must contain cited information from a source. Students should use a combination of quoting, paraphrasing, and summarizing to incorporate cited evidence into their writing.

Week of January 27th

Students in 7th grade this week will be working on vocabulary unit 4 on page 355 of the Pearson Realize textbook. Students in grade 8 will be reviewing appropriate MLA methods of incorporated cited evidence in preparation for the research paper this marking period. Both classes will have the Week 8 Paragraph bellringer due on Thursday, worth 20 points.


English 7
On Monday, we will review the vocabulary words from Unit 4. Definitions and related words were given last week. Students will complete a practice worksheet and then work in collaborative pairs to discuss and revise answers. On Tuesday, we will review the worksheet as a class so that students may use it to study for the quiz on Wednesday.

On Thursday and Friday, we will read a non-fiction article from the textbook and review figurative language.

English 8
On Monday, we will review the differences between quoting, paraphrasing, and summarizing. On Tuesday, we will read an article and practice the three different ways of incorporating cited information. For the remainder of the week, students will review the requirements for the research paper, the rubric, and begin brainstorming research questions. On Friday, we will complete an example source card to prepare students to do their research on their chosen topic. We will be in the library three days next week to complete the research.

Week of January 13th

Students in English 7 will finish working specifically with prepositions this week by taking and then correcting their quiz. We will also review work from last week, which will be collected for points. Students in English 8 will be practicing and finishing work with vocabulary Unit 4 and will have a quiz on those words on Tuesday.


English 7
Students will take a quiz on prepositions on Monday and begin working on their Week 7 Paragraph bellringer. Students will complete day 1 after their quiz.

On Tuesday, we will review The Run part 6. This was the assignment from Friday and it must be complete by the start of class on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, students will complete their mid-year CDT benchmark assessment. This will be due on week from Thursday, but Thursday and Friday will be the only two days in class to complete the assignment. Students should see me for a pass to complete this assignment in the school library during AC prep if necessary. This assignment cannot be completed outside of school.

When students finish CDTs, they will have the opportunity to complete corrections for their preposition quiz. The corrections will be a grade separate from the quiz grade. Students must complete all corrections to receive credit for this assignment. Corrections will be due Monday, 1/20.

Students will practice their Unit 4 vocabulary words at the beginning of the week to prepare for this quiz on this unit. Students will take the Unit 4 vocabulary quiz on Tuesday, 1/14.

This will be due on week from Thursday, but Thursday and Friday will be the only two days in class to complete the assignment. Students should see me for a pass to complete this assignment in the school library during AC prep if necessary. This assignment cannot be completed outside of school.

English 7 Quiz Update

Students in English 7 were scheduled to take a quiz on prepositions on Friday. With delays and early dismissals, this quiz has been moved to Monday, 1/13/2020.

Week of January 6th

This week students in 7th grade will be focusing on prepositions and prepositional phrases. This will be tied into identifying subjects and verbs and a quiz will be administered at the end of the mini-unit. Students in 8th grade will be finishing their unit on prepositions and moving on to vocabulary unit 4 on page 343 of the textbook.

English 7
On Monday students will submit their essays and complete day 1 of the week 7 language bellringer. This bellringer will be due on Friday and will be worth 20 points. Essays will be accepted Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday with a late penalty. No essays will be accepted after Thursday.

For the remainder of the week, students will practice prepositions. We will take notes and practice on Tuesday and Wednesday. On Thursday we will review. On Friday we will have a quiz on prepositions. This quiz will include subjects and verbs.

The preposition quiz was moved from Monday to Tuesday because of the 2-hour delay. Students will complete day 1 and day 2 of their week 7 language bellringer on Monday. This bellringer will be due on Friday and will be worth 20 points.

On Tuesday students will complete their quiz on prepositions. Remember, this quiz includes subjects and verbs.

For the remainder of the week students will work on Vocabulary from Unit 4 of the textbook. The words can be found on page 343. There will be a quiz on the vocabulary words on Friday.
